Challenge

The customer came to me with an idea that they believed could be expanded into a real business opportunity in South Africa. The primary challenge was to design an app that could be used to attract investors and gain buy-in from key businesses like health insurance companies in the country. The design needed to be affordable yet modern and imitate a fully designed and working system as actual development on the app would need to wait until the business had investor buy in.

Results

The app was designed and is being showcased in 2025 to several health insurance companies. At this point there is no actual stats on uptake and investment but the customer is optimistic and hopes to start actual development in late 2025.

Process

Research & Analysis: The client approached me with much of the actual concept already thought out, we sat together over a brief video call and discussed the notes he'd made and ideas he'd fleshed out as well as the style choices he'd made and layout thoughts he had. The only research I was required to do was investigate the legibility of dark theme apps at night.

Information Architecture: Based on the research the client did and my findings regarding the colour scheme, I opted to ensure minimal flow diversions and clear user paths of only one or two options at most per screen.

Wireframing & Prototyping: I designed the app and made simple animations to visualise the user walking through the app in real time. These designs and slides were passed onto the client for review and feedback. The feedback helped optimise the user flows and final designs.

Usability Testing: The user acceptance testing was brief and straight forward given that this was done using only a step-by-step prototype design. However, I believe the several itterations helped us clean up our designs in order to present the best work to the potential stakeholders.

Visual Design & Style Guide: This was consider out of scope for this project.

“ I am really optimistic that this design will help show our investors our seriousness about bringing this app to life. ”

Conclusion

I am really excited to hear back on the investor meetings and introductions to my designs. I really do think they will make a difference in getting a bigger buy-in from the potential customers. I felt it was important to showcase this app as it was some of my favourite design work that I ironically did for a friend for free. The project taught me that the work is often rewarding and exciting.
